A Gurdwara is a place where people come to meditate; where children learn about Sikhism; where the elderly come to help others.

Guru Arjan Dev Ji Gurdwara was the first Gurdwara for it's community in Derby. For over 20 years, the building has remained the same. I was tasked with designing a new space which would connect with every generation; aiming to create a hub for the community.

Nature was the driving factor when exploring the experience I strived to create; using natural light to direct visitors to their destination. The building had to be relevant to it's surroundings but how could Sikhi and it's core function dictate the form?

Experience the space

The aim was to create something iconic; respecting the Sikh values that a Gurdwara stands for whilst being relevant in current times to the Derby community.

I am completely inspired to see your design for the Temple in Derby.

The design process is beautiful.

Constant iteration, using models and sketches helped to realise the initial concept. A small balsa mockup, helped me to understand how light could be manipulated as an experiential driver and thus, furthered my design.
